Prof Wouter Hanegraaff – Western Esotericism: A Radically Inclusive Vision of its Forgotten Histories

Would you think that paganism, magic or spiritual enlightenment are legitimate parts of Western culture?

In this webinar, Wouter Hanegraaff will talk about the modern study of esotericism as a vital dimension of Western culture, from antiquity to the present. The label esotericism covers an enormous field of influential intellectual and spiritual traditions that used to be dismissed by the academy as rejected knowledge, resulting in a narrow and impoverished vision of Europe and the West. By taking these forgotten and discredited traditions seriously again, we can move beyond Eurocentric arrogance and imperialist narratives to learn thinking in new, entirely different and much more positive ways about the nature of Western culture.

This webinar by Wouter Hanegraaff will be followed by live Q&A.

Wouter J Hanegraaff (1961) is professor of History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and is currently considered the leading academic authority on esotericism in Western culture.
