Ana María Llamazares – From the Clock to the Lotus Flower. Metaphors for navigating the shift in paradigms

Which metaphor is shaping your life right now: the clock that measures and controls, or the lotus that grows from the mud toward the light?

Metaphors are powerful symbols for transformation. They are not just images that constellate a network of concepts, values, and emotions shaping how we think and exist in the world; more importantly, along with the butterfly effect, they act as attractors that allow us to envision possible future horizons.

Fifteen years after its initial release, the book "From the Clock to the Lotus Flower. Contemporary Crisis and Paradigm Shift" by Ana María Llamazares has been reissued in Argentina. It describes the shift in paradigms as the backdrop to the contemporary crisis, offering insight not only into the deeper reasons behind the collapse of the "clockwork world" but also revealing the essence of new ways of living, knowing, and finding meaning—forms that are emerging from the mud, much like the lotus flower.

In her talk, the author will use a symbolic lens to explore the meaning of these two great metaphors—the clock and the lotus flower—which form the imaginative foundation of our current worldviews. She will also address the implications of the threat posed by unregulated AI within this process of shifting paradigms and consciousness. Just as on the book’s cover, the butterfly—a symbol of transformation—coexists with what is known as the "Lorenz attractor," a shape from chaos geometry that illustrates how small changes can produce massive effects.
