The most fundamental crisis in the world today is a psychological and spiritual one: a form of arrested human development that has been widespread in most contemporary cultures for thousands of years and has many  culture-decaying  results, including an absence of deep meaning or purpose. All other major crises in our world today — social and racial injustice, addictions and violence, environmental pollution, mass extinction, family dysfunctions, political dysfunctions, climate disruption, endless war — grow out of this bedrock existential loss: so many people experiencing their lives as empty, or suspecting human life, more generally, to be meaningless.

During this session, we’ll explore the journey of soul initiation — a psychospiritual adventure that connects us in the most profound way to the Earth community, catalyzes our deepest experience of personal meaning, and results in our most valuable and fulfilling contribution to life.  Based on the experiences of thousands of people he and his colleagues have guided over the past 40 years, Bill will map the terrain of the five phases of the descent to soul, which includes the dissolution of current identity, the encounter with the mythopoetic mysteries of soul, and the metamorphosis of the ego into a co-creator of life-enhancing culture. He  will also introduce an ecocentric and soulcentric map of the eight stages of human  development and a nature-based  map  of the human psyche.

About the speaker:

Bill Plotkin, PhD is a eco-depth psychologist, wilderness guide, and agent of cultural evolution. As founder of southwest Colorado’s Animas Valley Institute, he has, since 1980, guided thousands of women and men through nature-based initiatory passages, including a contemporary, Western adaptation of the pan-cultural vision fast. He’s also been a research psychologist (studying nonordinary states of consciousness), professor of psychology, rock musician, and whitewater river guide.  In 1979, on a solo winter ascent of an Adirondack mountain, Bill experienced a “call to spiritual adventure,” leading him to abandon academia in search of his true calling. Bill is the author of  ’Soulcraft: Crossing  into the Mysteries of Nature’ and ‘Psyche,  Nature and the Human Soul: Cultivating Wholeness and Community in a Fragmented World’,  ’Wild Mind: A Field Guide to the Human Psyche’, and his most recent  ‘The Journey of Soul Initiation: A Field Guide for Visionaries, Evolutionaries, and Revolutionaries’.
