Dr Caroline Myss – The Spiritual Challenge of Confronting Evil
How should we think about evil these days?
I’ve heard many people dismiss the existence of "evil", but I also realised immediately that the very thought of evil being an active ingredient in the on-going dynamic of creation was uncomfortable for them to consider. In my early 20’s, I read a front page story in the Chicago Tribune about a man who had managed, with great effort, to leave a Satanic cult. The reporter conducting the interview approached the man with incredible skepticism, as I imagine many would. But then he said this, "Arrogance is the devil’s greatest asset when it comes to influencing the mind of a human being. The dark counts on our disbelief, as it gives darkness complete freedom to engage in human activities."
I knew he had just spoken a very real mystical truth, and it has remained a truth for me all my life. In my early years as a medical intuitive, I would never have asked someone struggling with despair or depression what their thoughts were about the presence of evil in their lives. Such a question seemed so "catholic".
Today, I look for the handiwork of darkness as a significant influence in human suffering. People have no idea how easy it is to become comfortable with dark influences, such as the occasional lie or acts of dishonesty. But one lie always leads to another and once lying becomes part of your ordinary behaviour, darkness has its hooks in you. And so, in this session, I will discuss evil as one of the more pressing spiritual challenges of our time.
