Dr. Michael Ebstein – Akbarian Humanism Revisited: on the Centrality of Man in the Mystical Thought of Muhyi al-Din Ibn al-Arabi (1165-1240)

The so-called “Middle Ages” are often perceived as a period in which God was placed at the center of humanity’s intellectual and spiritual world, whereas man was pushed to the margins. The sophisticated and radical theosophy of the influential Muslim mystic Muhyi al-Din Ibn al-Arabi (1165-1240) proves otherwise. In this webinar we will discuss the enlightened vision of man in the teachings of Ibn al-Arabi, or al-Shaykh al-Akbar, “the greatest shaykh”, as he has been called by his followers through the ages.

Dr.MICHAEL EBSTEIN teaches at the Arabic Language and Literature Department at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He specializes in classical Islamic mysticism, focusing particularly on Andalusi mysticism and on the links between Islamic and Jewish mysticism in medieval Spain.
