Dr Richard Petty – Diseases of Discipleship: An Evolutionary Perspective
As an active meditator since the 1970s, I soon began to encounter increasing numbers of people who were undergoing alterations and then expansions of consciousness which frequently developed into profound spiritual experiences. Sadly, these were often accompanied by bewildering physical and psychological symptoms. Though some could be described as experiences of the “kundalini-type,” or as other forms of “spiritual emergency,” there are a great many others that are sometimes referred to collectively as “Diseases of Discipleship.”
Though initially most of these people were involved in intensive spiritual practices, cults, or had even experimented with chemical agents or sensory deprivation, since the late 1980s most that we have seen have occurred spontaneously. It quickly became clear that many of the problems seen in individuals are also spreading globally in waves. Happily, if recognised, they often can be helped quickly and easily. This webinar will examine some of the known – and also some of the suspected – causes of this global phenomenon, and some initial steps towards recognising and supporting people to achieve balanced development.

About the speaker:
Richard G. Petty graduated in medicine from the Royal London Hospital Medical College, University of London. While a student, he developed a deep and abiding interest in the work of Carl Jung and spent two years training in psychotherapy. After graduation, he also obtained a Master’s Degree in Biochemistry, a doctorate in endothelial cell biology and trained in acupuncture and qigong in England and then in China and the USA. He is also a homeopath and Reiki master. He practised, researched and taught internal medicine, endocrinology and metabolic medicine for 14 years, before psychiatric training at the Bethlem Royal & Maudsley Hospitals, London and a Research Fellowship in Neuroimaging at Johns Hopkins University Medical School, Baltimore. He spent several years on the Faculty of the University of Pennsylvania and has been a visiting Professor, Guest Lecturer, Keynote Speaker and workshop leader who has worked with more than 250,000 people on every continent.
