Felicity Warner – Soul Midwifery: The Five Stages of Dying – Holistic and Spiritual Care

Can holistic and spiritual care of the dying enrich end of life care?

Dying is a complex spiritual process as well as a medical event.

Felicity says: “Soul Midwives offer spiritual and holistic support to the dying from diagnosis until death (…and slightly beyond).

The Soul Midwifery therapeutic model is based on five distinct phases, where physical and psycho-spiritual markers show how best to support the dying person at each stage. This results in highly individual person -centered death care where the whole person is supported.

People diagnosed with a terminal illness are often in a state of emotional chaos when they begin treatment. I like the analogy of the Japanese art of Kintsugi… putting broken pottery pieces back together with gold — a metaphor for holding space while the vessel repairs and becomes perhaps even stronger and more beautiful.

Attention, deep listening and presence may be amongst the greatest gifts we can offer to those facing the end of life. By accompanying them on the inner journey, we may help them to navigate the numerous challenges and opportunities and to face death with a tranquil mind.”
