Prof Darren Oldridge – Talk of the Devil: A Historical Perspective on the Prince of Darkness
The Christian Devil has loomed large in western history, and remains a lively and complicated figure in contemporary culture. This presentation considers the various manifestations of the ancient enemy since the late Middle Ages, with a particular focus on the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It will touch on ideas that are perennially fascinating and tricky, including the nature of temptation and the idea of hell.
DARREN OLDRIDGE is Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Worcester. He has published widely on religion and the supernatural in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and is the author of The Devil: A Very Short Introduction. He is currently writing a book on English demonology.
