Can Psychedelics Prove the Limits of a Purely Materialist Mind?
Psychedelics such as psilocybin, LSD, and DMT are increasingly recognised by contemporary science as powerful and reliable means for inducing spiritual and mystical experiences. These profound subjective states are often characterised by a sense of unity, sacredness, ego dissolution and oceanic boundlessness, and recent research has begun linking them to significant improvements in mental health outcomes.
By enabling the systematic study of altered states of consciousness, psychedelics are offering an empirical pathway for investigating phenomena that science has long struggled to approach, including therapeutic healing, ego dissolution, and the nature of consciousness itself. In doing so, they are helping to bridge the long-standing gap between subjective spirituality and objective neuroscience.
In this talk, Sebastian Salicru explores how these findings challenge strictly materialistic assumptions within postmodern science. When consciousness can be so profoundly modified, and expanded, through changes in brain network connectivity, the questions that follow go far beyond the clinical. They reach into the heart of what mind, self and experience actually are.

About the speaker:
Sebastian Salicru is a psychologist, psychotherapist, board-approved supervisor, and coach in private practice with over 30 years of experience across clinical and corporate settings. His work explores the interface between psychotherapy, consciousness studies, spirituality, and the potential role of psychedelic-assisted therapies. His ORCID and Google Scholar profiles reflect his ongoing scholarly engagement. Sebastian is a contributor to Psychology Today, an international affiliate member of the American Psychological Association and the Scientific & Medical Network, and a signatory to the Manifesto for a Post-Materialist Science.
