In the early 1990s, I succumbed to viral myocarditis. This enlarged my heart leaving me with numerous physical ailments. I went on to study for a BA in Business, and then began working for the University of Birmingham has a Careers Consultant. In the 2000s, I experienced further cardiac issues as a result of my earlier illness, and I sought to engage with the illness both with, and beyond, traditional allopathic medicine. This began a long journey of recovery; learning to listen to the soft whispers of my heart’s wisdom and guidance. This meant un-learning almost everything I was taught about the world through the contemporary Western approach towards knowledge; along the way gaining an MSc in Holistic Science from the Schumacher College, and a PhD in Transformative Education from Canterbury Christ Church University. During my research I listened to the teachings of my heart, developing a process called Heart Sense. Through the Heart Sense Research Institute, I now run group personal development journeys, and also work individually with clients. I also have the honour and privilege of working for the SMN as the Membership Manager and Young Person Support Administrator. The SMN’s work and vision is closely aligned with my own, and it is wonderful to be able to be involved with the network as it evolves into the future.
