Priv.-Doz. Dr. Wolfgang Spiegel, born 1963 in Vienna., is a family physician and a senior research fellow and lecturer at the Centre of Public Health, Medical University of Vienna, Austria. His main fields of research are mental health (in primary care), primary health care, and medical education. Spiegel established and ran his own teaching practice in a Vienna from 1996 to 2016, caring for his patients under the Austrian social insurance scheme. Since than he concentrates on academic work and, in addition, runs a small private practice in Vienna. Spiegel is a past-president of the Viennese Society of General Practice and Family Medicine. From 2004-2010 Spiegel was the elected country representative for Austria to the European Academy of Teachers in General Practice (EURACT). In addition to teaching extensively on the undergraduate and graduate medical education level Spiegel is frequently holding continuing medical education (CME)-lectures for board-licensed physicians in Austria. As co-founder and president of “Austrian Physicians for Rural Medical Care in Africa” he developed, implemented and supervised a “community outreach program” in a rural region of the Republic of South Sudan which focuses on non-physician health workers who were given “supportive supervision” in rural patient care by GPs.
