Who was the real Mary Magdalene?
Join us to celebrate Honorary SMN Member and planetary elder Dr Anne Baring’s recent 90th birthday for a profound reflection on the meaning of Mary Magdalene for the spiritual renaissance of our time.
The story of Mary Magdalene and Jesus begins with the First Temple in Jerusalem in 621 BCE when the Wisdom Tradition of Israel was deleted from the teaching and practices of the Temple. Henceforth, only the monotheistic God would be worshipped by the Jews and also the Christians who adopted this image of deity. The Mission of both Jesus and Mary Magdalene was to restore the banished Wisdom Tradition which carried the feminine image of the Holy Spirit at its heart. Mary Magdalene’s Aramaic name was Miryam and her home was at Bethany, near Jerusalem. Until her Gospel of the Beloved Companion was published in 2010, the only known Gospel of Mary was three similar texts – all of which are missing vital pages – one of which was included in the gnostic texts published as the Nag Hammadi Library in 1977. The newly translated Alexandrian Greek text of her original Gospel of The Beloved Companion restores the electrifying message missing from the other three.
