| About Me | I was born in Tasmania to a family of entomologists, and followed in the family footsteps by specialising in Science at Bryanston (family in the UK 1944-52), doing a BSc Hons at the University of Sydney, and then a PhD in Biology (Insect physiology, Harvard). Four years trying unsuccessfully to be a lecturer in Biochemistry, and then in Zoology back in Australia. I began meditating during those years, and gradually transitioned across my working life to a Buddhist version of the Perennial philosophy. I spent most of my working years seeking to develop a holistic grasp of how our species adapts itself both biologically and cognitively to its environment, but totally disregards the need of any evolved creature on Earth not only to multiply and prosper but survive. I distilled a secularised version of this understanding into a series of undergraduate courses at the ANU in a Human Sciences Program, and finally a Science in Context one. I married Helen in 1973, and we had three wonderful children. Learnt Bahasa Indonesia, and mainly researched how old people manage in Java. Retired in 2000, and then spent 2005-14 with Helen in Geneva where she worked away in a succession of three global health jobs. I kept house, learnt French, and explored the archaeology of the Mediterranean among other things. We are now back in Australia living in Melbourne within easy reach of our kids, and two enchanting grandsons. My current foci of interest include continuing to master some other languages (Indonesian, French, Dutch), the nature of what we call ‘reality’, and the climate crisis. Stella Humphries introduced me several decades ago to the SMN, and this group has been a source of inspiration and guidance ever since. |
