Jane Henry – Transformative Approaches to Personal Development and Well-Being

What has helped and hindered your personal development, wellbeing and consciousness development?

In this talk Jane Henry will discuss strategies that people perceive as having helped their wellbeing, personal and consciousness development over the long-term. Jane will draw on qualitative research with 400 plus adults from the UK, Europe and India. Many participants report spiritually inspired approaches like quieting the mind, physical activity such as being outside, and social support as helpful. Mainstream approaches to personal development have traditionally favoured cognitive strategies designed to encourage reflection, insight and behaviour change. This research suggests various embodied, attentional and supportive approaches are perceived as transformative by many participants. A considerable body of research supports the idea that body-based activity, relaxing the mind and social embeddedness has positive benefits for mood, quality of life and consciousness. Jane will also discuss the implications for practice.
